Are you in line?

KatrinPaul_Areyouinline_01.jpgNew works by Katrin Paul created in & around Ho Chi Minh City with the support of the Goethe Institut Vietnam during a 37 days artist-in-residence at a little blah balh (ALBB) Saigon, September/October 2007

Katrin Paul, a German artist, manly using photography as her medium, has been working in Saigon for a month developing a new series of photographs and line drawings that challenge the traditional concept of the photographic portrait. The work, “Are you in line?” raises many questions about the conventions and expectations of portraiture. The work has allowed her to work intimately with several families that have 4 generations.

In my photographic work I am very interested to find new ways of visualization by simple means. At the moment I am especially interested in situations of "light in total blackness".

Black is the new theme of Katrin Paul. Her large-sized photographs, in which she is concerned with the presence of light in almost absolute blackness, indicates a change of direction within Katrin Paul's artwork. Previously explored themes, the human being and the human portrait, have been temporarily set aside to pursue this new field of questioning.

At the same time as the black photographs 100 100 100 0 or 0 0 0 100 Katrin Paul developed for the first time paper works (ink-books), in which absolute blackness, desire, penetration, light and time are her subject in question.
This work, to be viewed playfully like an oversized flipbook, exudes a profound self-contained charm.

PotchPotch 2007

PotchPotch 2007
Mixed material, ink, books

Slowly ink drops from the ceiling onto a book. The same situation three times. The books the ink is being dropped on are books concerned with culture, heritage and language. The ink will sink into and through the books creating visual patterns. Over the period of the 3 days exhibition the books will be black, almost covered completely with ink. Over time, creating new, loosing old?

The drunken spider 2007
Knitted fishing thread

The drunken spider tries to mimic real spiders. The drunken spider situates himself close to places where real spiders are already doing their work. After a moment of slight irritation the imperfection of the human hand can be realized.
